What is Hulu + Live TV and how is it different than HuluLive TV?

Hulu Live TV and Hulu+ Live TV are the same thing.  The plus sign simply indicates the addition of live TV channels to its streaming library.  In fact, Hulu was the first streaming TV provider to make use of this symbol.

As opposed to regular Hulu TV, which is a streaming library of shows accessed on demand, HuluLive TV is a linear TV streaming service.  It uses the same model of regular cable and satellite TV providers:  TV shows are based on a channel grid schedule.  “Linear TV” refers to the change of shows for a given live channel (network) over time.

Hulu Live offers competition to other streaming TV providers in terms of having live channels in addition to video-on-demand services.  These competitors include YouTube TV, Fubo TV, Sling tv, Philo TV and DirecTV Stream.  Finally, Hulu Live TV is available both with and without ads for $70 and $76/month, respectively (as of Dec. 2021).

Hulu Live TV Channels and Hulu Add-on Packages

Hulu + Live TV Channel Notes:

As advertised on their website, Hulu offers “75+ stations” (base channels) as well as numerous add-ons.  However, when counted, the actual number of base stations is 85, so that’s a bonus.  All major local stations are available with Hulu and include ABC, CBS, NBC and The CW.

Major sports networks include the ESPN “series”*, CBS and NBC Sports (CBSN and NBCSN, respectively), Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, SEC Network, ACCN and the Big Ten Network.  Along with NFL Network, these all are base channels for Hulu whereas NFL Redzone is an add-on.

Finally, Hulu sports channels also include the Golf Channel and Olympic channel (both are base channels), whereas Motortrend, Sportsman Channel and TVG Racing 1 and 2 are add-ons.

Notably missing from the Hulu sports lineup are MLB Network, NHL Network and NBA TV.  However, basketball fans can catch most games on either ABC, ESPN, TNT or regional sports networks from NBCSN and Fox Sports.

Hulu Add-Ons:

In addition to Disney+ and ESPN+, which are both streaming hubs as opposed to live channels, Hulu offers both “network add-ons” and “premium network add-ons”.

Hulu network add-ons come in three packages: Entertainment (16 channels), Sports (6 channels) and Español (7 channels).
